Ohio Boy Gives Up $300 Xbox to Help the Homeless

Turn on any news channel these days, and it seems easier to spot the negatives over the positives. So here’s a “Feel Good Story” you can take with you into your day.

Mikah Frye, a 9 year old from Cleveland, OH learned that having a kind heart and giving selflessly feels good, and sometimes that selfless act comes back around.

You see, Mikah knows what living in poverty feels like. His family fell on hard times a few years ago when they lost their home and found comfort in a homeless shelter. Every night at the shelter, Mikah would get a blanket, and then every morning the shelter would then have to take it back.

Now that his family is doing better, Mikah knew he was going to be getting a Xbox for Christmas, which costs $300. Seeing homeless people in the cold, and remembering what he and his family went through, Mikah did some math. He realized, at $10 a blanket, he could buy 30 blankets to help the homeless — and that $300 would be better spent on helping others than on himself.

On the selfless act, Mikah’s grandmother says, “He knew what it was like to not have a blanket at night, and when he got one he’d have to give it back. So the first thing [Mikah] wanted to do was give a blanket that they could keep.”

…but wait there’s more!

Mikah’s story got the attention of Microsoft, who manufactures Xbox, and the company decided to surprise Mikah with the Xbox as a gift.
